Accredited Dental Hygienist Schools Near Central Indiana

      Dental hygienists have a variety of duties such as cleaning teeth, examining teeth and gums, giving anesthetics, performing diagnostic tests and teaching patients good oral hygiene and other preventive efforts. They must know how to use equipment and instruments including X-ray machines and ultrasound tools. Dental hygienists typically attend college for two or four years and obtain an associate or bachelor's degree. Several colleges in and near central Indiana have accredited dental hygienist programs at colleges.

    Indiana University School of Dentistry

    • Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis offers an Associate of Science in dental hygiene and a Bachelor of Science in public health dental hygiene. Instruction takes place in classrooms, labs and clinical settings. The associate program takes two years to complete after students complete prerequisites. Prerequisites include English, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, sociology and psychology. Dental courses for the associate degree include periodontics, oral anatomy and pathology, radiology, dental materials, preventive dentistry, pharmacology and therapeutics. Those interested in the associate program must fill out an application, submit transcripts from any previous college experience, complete at least eight hours observing a dental hygienist at work and complete the college's dental hygiene orientation session. Students interested in the bachelor's degree program must have completed an associate level dental hygiene program, taken and passed the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam and have a current dental hygiene license. Students in the bachelor's program will complete 32 additional hours of coursework including advanced community dental hygiene and dental science.

    Ivy Tech Community College

    • Ivy Tech Community College in Anderson offers a two-year Associate of Science in dental hygiene. Students will receive classroom, lab and clinical instruction and practice. Prerequisite coursework includes math, social and physical sciences, communication and life skills. Core classes include nutrition and oral health, head and neck anatomy, dental emergencies, managing pain and oral embryology and histology. Interested students must apply to and be accepted by the college and complete prerequisites before applying to the dental hygiene program.

    • Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, is about 40 miles from central Indiana. The school offers an Associate in Applied Science in dental hygiene. Interested students must apply to the college and the dental hygiene program. General education coursework includes speech, composition, social sciences and biology.     • Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio, is about 45 miles from central Indiana and offers an Associate of Applied Science in dental hygiene. Students interested in the program must apply to the college and dental hygiene program. Instruction time includes class, lab and clinical practice.
