How to Build a Car Battery Charger

    • 1). Set the transformer on the metal block and mark where the transformer mounting holes will be located. Drill two holes at those locations and bolt the transformer to the mounting block. Drill a separate hole for the rectifier.

    • 2). Secure the rectifier to the mounting block. Make sure that the terminals of the rectifier do not touch the metal part of the mounting block. Connect the two wires of a power cord to the transformer's two terminals, which are on the primary side. The order does not matter in this case.

    • 3). Cut two six-inch black wires. Also, cut one six-foot red wire and one six-foot black wire. Strip 1/2 of an inch of insulation off of the ends of each wire. Take the two short black wires and connect the two 12-volt terminals of the transformer to the two AC, or alternating current, terminals of the bridge rectifier.

    • 4). Connect one end of the red six-foot wire to the positive terminal of the rectifier. Connect one end of the six-foot black wire to the negative terminal of the rectifier. Place alligator clips on the other ends of both wires.
